Vintage Sports Card Sales Reach New Heights at REA’s February Auction

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) hit a home run with their recent February auction, raking in over $1.2 million in sales of vintage sports cards and memorabilia. At the forefront of this success was the sale of a PSA 5 graded M116 Sporting Life Honus Wagner card, which commanded an impressive $75,000 price tag, setting a new benchmark for its version and emphasizing the strong demand for rare vintage sports cards among collectors.

Not stopping at the Wagner card, the auction also featured a Ty Cobb Blue Background card from the same M116 Sporting Life series. Graded PSA GOOD 2, this card shattered records for its condition, fetching a remarkable $15,000. The inclusion of ten Mint 9 graded cards from the 196 Topps set further fueled excitement among registry builders and collectors. Of note was the #2 Roman Mejias PSA MINT 9 card, which soared to an auction high of $19,200, a testament to the allure of high-grade cards even for non-Hall of Famers.

With an extensive lineup of 2,732 items on the auction block, REA showcased a wide array of collectibles that captured the attention of enthusiasts. Alongside the Wagner and Cobb cards, other notable sales included a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Portrait Red Background PSA VG-EX 4 which fetched $21,000, a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig PSA EX-MT 6 that went for $18,000, and a 1986-1987 Fleer Basketball PSA NM-MT 8 Complete Set that closed at $12,000.

Brian Dwyer, President of REA, expressed satisfaction with the auction’s success and the enthusiastic response from the collector community. Looking ahead, Dwyer teased upcoming events, hinting at exciting prospects for REA’s March and Spring Auctions and underscoring the vibrant future of the sports collectibles market.

The recent auction by REA not only highlights the enduring allure and value of vintage sports cards and memorabilia but also sets the stage for future events that promise to deliver even more excitement for collectors and enthusiasts. With the Encore event scheduled for March 14-24 and the Spring Catalog Auction kicking off on April 5, REA continues to solidify its position as a premier destination for those passionate about the sports collectibles market.
