Sotheby’s “Sports Week” Showcases Iconic Athletes’ Memorabilia

Next month, Sotheby’s is set to host a thrilling series of sports auctions under the title “Sports Week.” The event promises an exciting showcase of prized memorabilia tied to some of the most iconic athletes in modern sports history. From the unparalleled achievements of legends like Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali to the career milestones of Kobe Bryant and Wayne Gretzky, this auction series offers a prime opportunity for collectors and enthusiasts to own a piece of sporting history.

The “Sports Week” extravaganza will feature a lineup of six live and online auctions, all taking place at the prestigious setting of New York. These auctions will delve into the illustrious careers of renowned athletes such as Tom Brady, Steph Curry, and more, presenting fans with a chance to acquire unique pieces associated with their favorite sports stars.

One of the standout auctions is the “Los Angeles Lakers | Capsule Collection,” running from March 27 to April 10. This collection will offer exclusive items like Kobe Bryant’s Game 1 jersey from the 2009 Finals, valued at an estimated $1.5 to $2.5 million. Additionally, a Lebron James jersey commemorating his historic 38,000th point game is expected to fetch between $300,000 and $500,000. Proceeds from select Lakers auction items will go toward supporting the Lakers Youth Foundation, adding a philanthropic element to the event.

Fans of boxing legend Muhammad Ali will be thrilled to find his boxing trunks from the historic 1975 ‘Thrilla in Manila’ fight against Joe Frazier up for auction. Previously sold for $118,500 in 2012, these trunks are now anticipated to command an impressive $4 to $6 million in their dedicated auction, reflecting the enduring appeal of Ali’s legacy.

Another highlight of the auctions is a pair of Michael Jordan’s autographed shoes from Game 5 of the 1996 NBA Finals. These shoes, gifted to two former Seattle Supersonics ball boys by Jordan himself, are projected to fetch between $200,000 and $400,000 as a unique pair linked to a pivotal moment in Jordan’s career.

The “ZENITH | Important Sports Artifacts” auction will showcase a range of significant items, including Jordan’s ‘Shattered Backboard’ jersey from 1985, Ernie Banks’ 500th home run jersey, and a Wayne Gretzky St. Louis Blues jersey from the 1995-96 season. These artifacts provide a glimpse into the rich history and achievements of some of the greatest athletes across different sports disciplines.

For NBA enthusiasts, the auctions will also feature memorabilia from the 2024 All-Star Game. Items such as jerseys worn by LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, Steph Curry, and Sabrina Ionescu during the event’s festivities will be up for grabs, offering fans a chance to own a piece of this star-studded basketball extravaganza.

Overall, Sotheby’s “Sports Week” presents a unique opportunity for sports fans, collectors, and investors to acquire prized memorabilia linked to sports legends and their defining moments. With a diverse array of items spanning basketball, boxing, hockey, and more, this auction series is set to captivate audiences and collectors alike with its exclusive offerings and historic significance.
