REA’s March Auction Smashes Sales Records

Robert Edward Auctions (REA) made headlines with their March Encore auction that saw the shattering of multiple sales records for vintage cards. The highlight of the event was the sale of a 1933 V353 World Wide Gum Canadian Goudey #80 Babe Ruth card in a PSA EX-NM 6 condition, reaching an impressive $32,400.

The auction, featuring over 3,300 lots, gathered a staggering $1.3 million from enthusiastic bidders who submitted nearly 66,000 bids. Several iconic pieces took center stage during the event, with notable sales contributing to the overall success of the auction.

Among the standout sales was a 1911 E94 George Close Candy Ty Cobb in a SGC POOR 1 condition, which fetched $28,000. Additionally, a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Ty Cobb Bat Off Shoulder with a Tolstoi Back in a PSA EX 5 condition sold for $27,600, setting new records for these collectibles.

Collectors and enthusiasts witnessed the excitement as a 1976 Topps #500 Reggie Jackson card in a PSA GEM MINT 10 condition was sold for an impressive $30,000. Another highlight was the 1980-1981 Topps Basketball Larry Bird/Magic Johnson Rookie card in a PSA MINT 9 condition, which reached a price of $25,200. The auction also featured a 1948-1949 Leaf #79 Jackie Robinson Rookie card in a PSA VG+ 3.5 condition, selling for $23,400.

Notable sales from the event included a 1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Honus Wagner card in a PSA GOOD 2 (MK) condition, as well as a 1951 Bowman #253 Mickey Mantle Rookie card graded SGC GOOD+ 2.5, each fetching $14,400.

Rare items also made waves at the auction, with an Extremely Rare 1921 Schapira Bros. Candy Babe Ruth box part reaching $10,800 and an 1888 N28 Allen & Ginter John Clarkson card in a PSA EX-MT 6 condition selling for $8,100, setting new records in their categories.

The auction further witnessed the setting of records by a Billy Southworth Single-Signed Baseball, a 1909-1911 T206 White Border Cy Young Portrait card in a PSA POOR 1 condition with a Brown Hindu Back selling for $7,500, and a 1934 R320 Goudey #37 Lou Gehrig card graded SGC GOOD+ 2.5 going for $5,280.

REA’s President, Brian Dwyer, hailed the auction’s success as a testament to the strength of the vintage market. The impressive results of the March Encore auction have set a positive tone for the highly anticipated upcoming Spring Catalog Auction, leaving collectors eager for more thrilling bidding wars and record-breaking sales in the future.
