Rare Find: Die-Cut 1952 Mantle Card on Auction

In the world of baseball memorabilia, one item has emerged as a true standout – a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card that defies convention. This particular card, currently up for auction by eBay seller Greg Morris, has been transformed in a way that sets it apart from all others. Despite its less-than-perfect condition, its rarity has captured the attention of collectors and fans alike.

Having been authenticated by Beckett Grading, the Mantle card in question has undergone extensive alterations, leading to the removal of a significant portion of its iconic background. What remains of the card shows signs of wear and creasing, hinting at a well-loved past before its unique redesign took place.

The reverse side of the card presents its own set of challenges, with adhesive residue obscuring parts of the original text. This aspect suggests that the card’s previous owners may not have fully appreciated its future value as a collectible item.

Given its distinctive alterations, Beckett has classified this card as Authentic/Altered. Although it was initially authenticated in 2017, it has only recently come into the possession of Morris as part of a collection acquired from another auction house.

In a market where even low-grade Mantle cards can fetch substantial sums, this “Half Mantle” is garnering significant interest due to its one-of-a-kind modifications. As the auction progresses, it is anticipated that this variant could potentially reach a price in the tens of thousands, reflecting its rarity and appeal to collectors.

This particular card isn’t the only one of its kind; a similarly adjusted Mantle card was previously displayed by CSG/CGC, showcasing a slightly better condition but still missing essential parts of its original border and displaying a “skinned” back.

Despite its unconventional presentation, the ongoing bidding process underscores the enduring popularity of Mickey Mantle, proving that interest in the baseball icon remains strong even in the face of such unique alterations. Enthusiasts are encouraged to follow the auction closely to witness the final sale price of this remarkable Mantle card.
